Once upon a time in an inner west pub ...

UMBRELLA THEATRE was conceived by two girlfriends, over beer, at their local bar. We then approached three other girls to get involved in this unique creative venture. Our backgrounds are diverse; we’re all physical theatre performers, actors, dancers, makers, designers, artists, arts administration, presenters, workshops facilitators and of course puppeteers. We have all performed nationally and internationally.

Chats with a seasoned set builder, sketches and many models later, Umbrella Theatre was underway – a garbage bin as a base and ‘stage’, and custom made aluminium pole and arms were coming together.

The name Umbrella Theatre is a no-brainer. It’s a mini theatre shaped into an umbrella! We believe in recycling wherever possible; a lot of our, sets, props, and puppets are ‘rescued materials’. (The bin and aluminium structure itself were brand new, we couldn’t compromise the structure.)
